Arriving in Mainfranken: How to quickly make connections here
Finding your feet in a new region
New place, new routine—and at first, no one you know. Whether it’s for your studies, a job, or a fresh start: many people come to Mainfranken alone. The first few days are often exciting, but also challenging.
The good news: making connections here is often easier than you think.
Why many people struggle at the beginning
That feeling is completely normal. Anyone moving to a new city often faces the same questions:
- Where do I meet people?
- How do I start a conversation?
- How do I make connections—and how do I find people who are a good match for me?
Especially when the language, culture, or environment are new, it can take some effort to put yourself out there.
The easiest ways to meet people
You don’t have to look far—often small steps are enough:
1. Introduce yourself to the neighbors
Even if it takes a bit of courage at first, why not ring your neighbors’ doorbells in your new home and introduce yourself in person? You might find an exciting new contact, nice housemates, or even an invitation to the next party behind one of those doors. Either way, you’ll create a friendly connection from the start and leave a positive first impression.
2. University groups & initiatives, clubs, or volunteering
At the University of Würzburg, the THWS Würzburg-Schweinfurt, and other institutions, there are numerous groups you can join. From sports and culture to academic topics—there is something for everyone.
Beyond that, non-university sports courses, choirs, theater groups, music clubs, or even volunteering are ideal for meeting like-minded people. These are great places to build relationships quickly in a relaxed setting.
3. Part-time jobs & internships
Working brings people together—often, contacts are made here just as quickly as in the lecture hall. It’s easy to meet up with nice colleagues for a post-work beer and get talking. Especially in smaller teams, personal connections that go beyond work develop quickly.
4. Events and activities
From wine festivals to campus events: Mainfranken thrives on encounters. It’s easy to strike up a conversation here because the atmosphere is casual. Often, a brief exchange is enough to make that first contact.
5. Look for other newcomers
You’re likely not alone in starting fresh in the city. Things are often easier when done with others who have also just arrived. You can discover the area together, share initial experiences, and build new social contacts at the same time. Not every encounter has to be permanent—but some can certainly develop into real friendships. Facebook groups for newcomers, networking via Instagram or Bumble BFF, or neighborhood apps can help you organize activities and meetups easily.
You are not alone—even if it feels that way
Especially at the start of a semester or when changing jobs, many people are in the same situation. The important thing is to be patient and take the initiative yourself. Sometimes it’s not the big events, but the small, recurring situations: the same course, the same café, the same walk to the university. If you visit the same places regularly, you’ll automatically run into the same people. And a quick “hello” turns into a conversation faster than you think.
