1) Take the City Train Through the City
A classic tip is a ride on the City Train through Würzburg’s old town. On the roughly 40-minute journey, you’ll learn interesting facts and the latest news about the city, and you can admire highlights such as the Residence, the Cathedral, or the view of the Main and Marienberg Fortress along the way.
If you’re interested in culture, you can visit the Museum im Kulturspeicher (MiK for short) for free on the first Sunday of every month and discover artworks from Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism, as well as contemporary art.
2) Experience the Forest With All Your Senses
In the district of Würzburg, the Walderlebnispfad Sinneswandeln in the Gramschatzer Forest stimulates different senses at five stations along the roughly one-kilometre trail. The aim is to consciously perceive your surroundings with all your senses—for people with and without disabilities.
3) Free Visit to the Wildlife Park
Whether a petting zoo, forest-education guided tours or numerous themed playgrounds: Der Wildpark an den Eichen in Schweinfurt is home to more than 350 animals, is open all year round, and is ideal for families with children—and anyone else who wants to experience animals up close.
4) Spooky Corn Maze in Grettstadt
You can experience the Halloween edition of the corn maze on 30 and 31 October at the Bio-Maislabyrinth in Grettstadt in the district of Schweinfurt. From 5 to 9 PM, the site turns into Halloween fun for the whole family.
5) Discover the Art of Pastry Chefs
At the Conditorei Museum in Kitzingen, baking enthusiasts will be in their element. The Renaissance half-timbered house itself was once a bakery workshop for gingerbread bakers and pastry chefs, and today invites you to explore restored former living quarters and an overview of the craft of bakers of the past. After your visit, you can take a cosy break in the adjoining café. You can find more museums and collections in the Kitzingen district here.
6) On the Trail of the Little Gnomes
You can experience a very special kind of walk between Bad Kissingen and Euerdorf on the Wichtelhöhlenweg. Along the way, you can discover rock formations that look like small caves where, according to legend, little gnomes and trolls hide. What’s more, you’ll spot small gnome figures in some places, making the legend feel real.
7) Along Hunters’ Trails to the Schwedenschanze
The roughly 6 km hike in the district of Haßberge leads along narrow hunters’ trails up to the plateau. From there, you can view the historic ring rampart, which is around 330 metres long and dates back to the Late Bronze Age. A visit to the viewing tower at the Schwedenschanze is also well worth it, offering a stunning panoramic view over the Haßberge.
8) Fascinating Moor Landscape
The Schwarze Moor in the district of Rhön-Grabfeld is part of the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve and is home to numerous extraordinary plant and animal species. Along a roughly 2.5 km wooden boardwalk, you can learn about the moor from 23 information panels. For a view of the entire moor, it’s worth climbing the viewing tower at the end of the circular route.
9) How About a Night Hike for a Change?
At “Im Dunkeln ist gut Munkeln”, you can discover the forest in the district of Main-Spessart at night. The roughly two-hour hike (Sat, 07/11 & Sat, 21/11) with a nature park guide is aimed at all target groups and invites you to explore the forest.
Last, but not least
Autumn is also a wonderful time of year to bury your nose in books, snuggle up on the sofa with a cup of tea, and start your favourite series all over again. A little walk along the Main, enjoying delicious coffee and cake in the many cafés in the region, or simply strolling around: autumn in the cities and districts of Mainfranken always delivers.
