What is a Regiopolis Region?

A Regiopolis Region is a spatial concept situated between a metropolis and rural area. The term is based on the idea that smaller, non-metropolitan cities and their surrounding areas can also take on important functions for their environment – particularly economically, culturally, scientifically, or infrastructurally.

Characteristics of a Regiopolis Region:

1. Medium-sized city as the center: Würzburg

With about 130,000 inhabitants, Würzburg is not a large city like Munich or Frankfurt, but it takes on a central role for the entire Mainfranken region. It is the economic, scientific, and cultural center in the Lower Franconia area.

2. Strong interconnection with the surrounding area

The region includes Würzburg as well as cities like Schweinfurt, Kitzingen, Bad Kissingen, Haßfurt, and the rural surroundings. There are close economic, infrastructural, and cultural connections, e.g., through commuter flows, cooperation in healthcare, or joint economic projects.

3. Independent profile

Mainfranken has a strong regional profile with unique characteristics such as:

  • Viticulture (well-known Franconian wine-growing region),
  • Medicine Health as well as Mechanical Engineering Automotive
  • Science location (University of Würzburg with international reputation, e.g., in biomedicine and Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences)
  • Cultural identity (e.g., Würzburg Residence as UNESCO World Heritage Site).

This combination makes Mainfranken independent and efficient as a region – even without the status of a metropolitan region.

4. Good accessibility

Mainfranken has a very favorable location in terms of transportation:

  • Autobahns A3, A7, A81,
  • ICE hub Würzburg (connection to e.g., Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Munich),
  • Proximity to international airports (Frankfurt, Nuremberg).

This facilitates access for companies, students, skilled workers, and tourists.

5. Supra-regional importance, but not a metropolis

The region has supra-regional significance, for example through:

  • the Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg and the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences
  • a multitude of innovative companies,
  • the touristic attractiveness (wine, nature, culture),
  • and the function as an administrative center (e.g., District Government of Lower Franconia).

Nevertheless, Mainfranken is not a metropolitan region – it lacks large corporate headquarters or international airports directly on site. However, the Regiopolregion Mainfranken is a strong player “between rural and metropolitan areas”.

Objective of the concept:

The concept was introduced to better highlight the potential beyond the major metropolitan areas and to specifically promote these regions – for example, in the field of regional development, structural support, or as locations for science and business.
