The best picnic spots in the region

Picnicking with a view

Whether right in the heart of Würzburg, among the vineyards, or with panoramic views: the Mainfranken region has plenty of special picnic spots for a short break from everyday life. We’ve put together the best places across the districts:

1) Picnic in the city and district of Würzburg

Würzburg’s Ringpark is a classic tip for anyone looking to take a quiet break away from the bustle of the city. Especially around Klein Nizza, it’s easy to unwind among flowerbeds and small ponds. With a picnic blanket and friends in tow, you can have a wonderful time here. The many trees offer plenty of shady spots on hot days. With views of the surrounding vines and the city of Würzburg, you can enjoy a picnic, for example, along the Wein-Stein-Pfad. Whether on a bench or a blanket, there are plenty of places to relax! At the Badebucht Eibelstadt, a picnic can also be combined with a swimming trip, which provides sufficient cooling.

2) Picnic in the city and district of Schweinfurt

Schweinfurt has many beautiful parks that are ideal for a short break from city life. In Chateaudun Park, by the historic city wall between the theatre and the art gallery, colourful flower islands and expansive green spaces invite you to relax. The fortifications also create that special picnic vibe with well-kept lawns, a duck pond and a fountain. Another spot is Motherwellpark, which offers not only flowers and sculptures but also a lake—a great place to just chill by the water. In the district of Schweinfurt, there are beautiful lakes such as the Sennfeld natural bathing lake, the Grafenrheinfeld natural bathing area or the Ellertshausen Lake, where a picnic break and a cool-down can be combined.

3) A break in the Haßberge

In the Haßberge Nature Park, there are plenty of places to picnic, relax and linger. The Wildcat Trail near Ebern is a varied option for families in particular to take a break. At the panorama swings in the region, you can enjoy a picnic as well as great views. If you’re looking for a medieval castle atmosphere, the picnic area at the Altenstein castle ruins is just right—here you can picnic with wonderful views over the Weisach and Baunach valleys.

4) Wide-open views in the Rhön-Grabfeld district

For a picnic in the Rhön, you’ll find a unique backdrop that combines mountains with the gentle hills of the Grabfeld. With sweeping views over the Streu Valley and perfect for hikers and nature lovers, the Gäulshimmel viewpoint offers a peaceful place to relax. At the Berghäuschen viewpoint, you get a wide panoramic view over the Grabfeld, the Haßberge and as far as the Rhön. The spot is also easy to reach via short hiking trails. Another classic tip is the Kreuzberg near Bischofsheim in the Rhön, from whose summit you can enjoy far-reaching views of the landscape. You can also get a wide view at the Sulzfeld picnic area. At what is probably Franconia’s northernmost vineyard, you can sit in a covered picnic hut, look out over the meadows and fields around Sulzfeld, and take a short break.

5) The best picnic spots in the Bad Kissingen district

Luitpoldpark, with its expansive lawns and old trees, is a wonderful place to relax. This spacious oasis of calm is an ideal spot for a picnic right in the heart of Bad Kissingen. The Wetterschutzhütte picnic area offers a quiet picnic option on the edge of the forest, with covered seating and wide open spaces in front. The Rose Garden or the Spa Gardens in Bad Kissingen are the perfect places to admire beautifully landscaped gardens right by the water and set up your picnic among shady avenues. The Kurgarten in Bad Bocklet is also a great place for a picnic break.

6) A short break in the Main-Spessart district

The barbecue area on Stettener Brückberg is a well-known viewpoint in Stetten, a district of the town of Karlstadt, and offers magnificent panoramic views over the vineyards and the river valley. Another spot is the Homburg castle ruins, surrounded by a large nature reserve where visitors can observe special plant and butterfly species. Various seating options with different viewpoints invite you to linger here. Lohr’s Romberg promises outstanding views of the Main and offers an ideal opportunity for a small picnic at several viewpoints.

7) Picnic spots in and around Kitzingen

In and around Kitzingen, there are plenty of picnic options for a short break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. On the Repperndorf wine hiking trail, you can enjoy the view of the vines while picnicking in the shade of the pavilion. Right in the city, the green spaces by the Old Main Bridge or at the Stadtbalkon offer a well-deserved break from everyday life. You can also cool off in the water on Mondsee Island first, then enjoy a relaxed picnic with friends or family afterwards.
