Excursion tips for the long weekend: Leisure buses, Dark Sky Park, and more.
No plans for the weekend yet?
The long weekend is just around the corner and Mainfranken is waiting for you with numerous excursion tips! Today’s focus: the Rhön Dark Sky Park and the VGN leisure buses.
Experience offers in the Rhön Dark Sky Park
The starry sky is one of the most impressive natural experiences of all – in the International Rhön Dark Sky Park, this fascination can be experienced particularly intensely. Here, exciting insights into the world of astronomy open up: What distinguishes stars from planets? Why does the North Star reliably point north? Why is the Big Dipper considered part of a Great Bear? And where is the moon during a new moon? Answers to these questions are offered in the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve through guided excursions, designated star-gazing sites, an astronomical platform, and newly created sky-viewing locations.
It is particularly important to use the protected areas respectfully, not only during the day but especially during the night hours. Clear rules apply in large parts of the Rhön nature: marked paths must not be left, and vehicles may only be parked in official parking lots.
1st Excursion tip: Stargazing on April 30
The certified Dark Sky Park guides of the Rhön accompany visitors on fascinating star walks through the nocturnal landscape. With sound knowledge and great enthusiasm, they open up new perspectives on the starry and night sky over Dermbach and the Rhön.
During the guided tours, participants experience the special atmosphere of the darkness, discover constellations, planets, and astronomical connections, and learn exciting facts about the significance of the Rhön Dark Sky Park. The star walks combine nature experience, knowledge transfer, and impressive moments under one of Germany’s most beautiful night skies.
2nd Excursion tip: Moonrise tour on May 1
During a Dark Sky Park tour with certified guide Matthias Poppe, the moon takes center stage as a fascinating companion of the night. On varied hikes, he vividly explains what distinguishes the moon from stars, planets, and the sun, and why its appearance constantly changes over time.
Participants gain exciting insights into astronomical phenomena such as tides, lunar and solar eclipses, and discover the scientific background of our Earth’s satellite. The program is complemented by interesting cultural-historical perspectives that have long highlighted the moon as a significant symbol and object of research.
In this way, the tour combines scientific findings with impressive natural experiences and makes the night sky in the Rhön Dark Sky Park tangible in a special way.
VGN leisure buses from Haßfurt
Starting May 1, 2026, the Burgenwinkel Express and the Beer and Wine Express will once again be running on Sundays and public holidays in the Haßberge district, bringing citizens and visitors comfortably, environmentally friendly, and flexibly to the most beautiful corners of the Haßberge district.
The Burgenwinkel Express starts in Haßfurt and runs via Königsberg, Hofheim, and Burgpreppach to Ebern through the northern district to historic towns, castles, and charming landscape parks. The Beer and Wine Express runs from Haßfurt via Knetzgau through the southern district and the Steigerwald to Ebrach to the Treetop Walk, offering access to vineyards, nature experiences, and cultural sights.
Thanks to modern rear bicycle racks on both bus lines, many sights can also be explored actively by bike. The travel times, which are optimally coordinated with regional train connections, also ensure a comfortable journey from the Greater Nuremberg area as well as from Würzburg and Schweinfurt.
